What is Petrified Wood?

Petrified Wood is actually a fossilized tree which has been buried by floods, landslides or volcanic ash. Because of a lack of oxygen, the rotting process is extremely slow. Water, rich with minerals (silicates or calcites) combined with traces of dissolved minerals – ( in our case, iron oxides), result in a wide variety of brown and tan shades in the petrified wood. Over hundreds of thousands of years, as the organic material in the original host log (especially stumps and roots) slowly decay, microscopic particles replace the organic material in such minute detail that the actual cell structure of the host is perfectly replicated. This process is referred to as “Permineralization”. Details such as growth rings, bark and knots are preserved in perfect detail.” The resulting “petrified” wood is extremely hard (8.0+ on the Mohs scale – diamonds rate as 10), and can only be cut with specially designed diamond saws, thus making it and an extremely durable surface for table and counter top applications.
